With 1.2 billion people as of 2014, India is the most populous country in South Asia and the second most populous country in the world. India spans 3.3 million square kilometers and shares a border with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Burma.

India is the world's fourth largest economy. The GDP measured $1.86 trillion in 2014. The GNI per capita of $1,550 (2014) varies widely from a poor state like Bihar to the relatively wealthy Maharashtra. India's economic growth began in the early 1990's and continues, driven in large part by the success of the high-tech service industry. Slightly less than half of the work force works in agriculture; India is a net exporter of food.

The country's large, young workforce increases by eight million people each year. Rural-urban migration is some ten million people annually. Of the working-age population, less than 10 percent have completed a secondary education.

Despite its economic reforms and successes, one-third of the world's poor (400 million people) live in India. An additional 53 million who are no longer classified as living in poverty are in danger of regression. Population growth in India's poorer states has created a situation where poverty rates there are 3-4 times higher than the wealthier states.

Environmentally, India's major issues include aquifer depletion, water scarcity, soil erosion, declining forest quality and other stresses from urbanization and private sector development. The growing population also strains natural resources. India faces continued air pollution from vehicles and industry as well as water pollution from sewage and industrial and agricultural chemicals.
